The Connecticut Attorney’s Grievance Committee has rejected a settlement based on a lawyer’s failure to document legal transactions between the law firm and their former client.
The committee held a public hearing in Hartford Superior Court on February 6, 2016, regarding the dispute in which a legal guardian, Kathleen Nastri, had claimed that her firm failed to account for $635,000.00 in expenses, following a $25 million award in a medical malpractice case related to her son’s birth.
The law firm had charged their clients $635,000.00 for legal expenses which were documented with cancelled checks, but failed to retain the receipts. In Connecticut, this violates American Bar Association Professional Rule 8.4, and could result in suspension or disbarment.
