The State of Maine has 16 counties, which each have their own trial courts. The Superior Court handles felony criminal cases, and civil cases involving damages exceeding $6,000. The Superior Court also hears small claims appeals from state and local administrative agencies. Any further appellate review is handled by the Supreme Court.

The three largest municipalities in Maine are Portland, Lewiston, and Bangor.
